Crocheted Mitten Instructions


Each year compassionate women take crochet hooks and dive into the creation of mittens. These tender offerings are then sent to children and adults in need, where their soft touch will help warm hands and gladden hearts.

Crocheted Mitten Instructions



Abbreviations:
ch = chain                                              
sc = single crochet                                                       
st = stitch                               
sc2tog = single crochet 2 stitches together Insert hook in next stitch, yarn over, pull loop through the front of work, insert hook into next stitch, yarn over, pull loop through to the front of work, yarn over and pull through all three loops on hook

Cuff:
Chain 11.
Row 1: Working in back loop only, sc in 2nd chain from hook and each chain across, ch1, turn.
Repeat row one for a total of 20 rows.  Fold cuff in half and join with slip st to form cuff.  Do not fasten off.   Ch 1.

Hand: (will be worked in a continuous round)

Round 1: Make 20sc evenly spaced around edge of ribbing.  Use safety pin to mark the beginning of the round.
Round 2: *2sc in first st, sc in next 4st* repeat from*to* 3 times (24st)
Round 3: Sc
Round 4: 2sc in first st, sc in next 11st, 2sc in next st, sc rest of the way around (26st)
Repeat rounds 3 and 4 two more times (30st)
Round 9: Skip 8 st, sc remaining st in round.  This makes 22st for fingers and 8 st open for thumb.
Round 10: Sc in each st of finger section
Round 11: 2sc in first st, sc next 10 st, 2sc in next st, sc rest of the way around (24st)
Round 12: Sc
Round 13: 2 sc in first st, sc next 11 st, 2 sc in next st, sc rest of the way around (26st)
Rounds 14-17: Sc
Decrease  round: *sc next 2 st, sc2tog*  Repeat from *to* 6 times (20st)
Next round: *sc in next st, sc2tog* Repeat from*to* six times (14st)
Last round: sc2tog 7 times (7st) join with slip stitch.  Fasten off leaving a tail.  Weave tail through stitches in last round and gather the top of the mitten securely.

Thumb:
Round 1: Join with sc in first skipped stitch of thumb opening, leaving a tail.  Sc in each remaining st around thumb opening (8st)
Round 2-5: Sc
Last round: sc2tog four times.  Join with a slip stitch.  Fasten off leaving a tail.  Weave tail through st of last round.  Gather the top of thumb securely.  Weave tail to close space between thumb and finger section.  Fasten off, weave in tails.
